When newborns need critical care, Marshfield Children’s Hospital is home to the region’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) connected to a designated children’s hospital. More than 250 high-risk infants are cared for at the 24-bed Marshfield Children’s NICU each year from throughout Northcentral Wisconsin and Upper Michigan — and the need continues to grow.
As more infants and families turn to the Marshfield Children’s NICU, the need for additional space and lifesaving equipment is greater than ever. Sanford Health Marshfield Clinic is stepping forward to meet these growing needs by building a new NICU featuring private rooms and the latest technology. Your support will help us build a new Marshfield Children’s NICU to transform critical care for our littlest patients.
Today’s Growing Need

The Urgency
The Marshfield Children’s NICU has been caring for high-risk infants from rural Wisconsin and Upper Michigan communities for more than 50 years. The lifesaving mission of our NICU has not changed, but the needs of our patients have.
- The current NICU features a pod model with up to 7 infants sharing space. The environment can elevate stress for infants, families and caregivers.
- Families experience limited privacy, and parents and guardians are unable to stay overnight with their infants in the NICU.
- An increased number of infants are being admitted to the NICU from throughout the Marshfield Children’s region.
- Care teams need dedicated space to collaborate and rest throughout the day so they can provide the best care to infants and families.
Transforming Lifesaving Care
In collaboration with pediatric teams, the Marshfield Children’s NICU has been reimagined to enhance the care experience for families. With your support, we can accelerate plans for the new NICU and ensure our littlest patients and their families can get the care they need in a state-of-the-art space.
Marshfield’s New NICU will…
- Feature 26 private rooms in a space 2.5 times larger than the previous NICU, allowing parents and guardians to stay overnight with infants.
- Provide innovative care with the latest equipment and technology and access to research at Marshfield Clinic Research Institute.
- Allow families to gather in dedicated spaces and find support during every stage of their NICU journey.
- Give NICU staff private spaces to collaborate on care plans and focus on wellness.
- Offer support services for families like child life and music therapy in partnership with Children’s Miracle Network.
