Caring for Kids at Sanford Children’s in Fargo

Every day, a local child in our community needs care for an unexpected diagnosis or life‑changing injury. In 2025 alone, 31,749 children relied on Sanford Children’s Hospital — the home of North Dakota’s only Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, only Level II Pediatric Trauma Unit, a Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, board-certified physicians, subspecialists and advanced practice nurses.

As a nonprofit hospital, Sanford Children’s relies on your support to fuel our mission. Will you join us?

Enhancing Local Pediatric Care

100% of every dollar raised stays local to provide services like child life, music therapy and the facility dog program, supply specialized lifesaving equipment, and assist families with meals, lodging, travel and other costs not covered by insurance.

See some of the ways gifts of every size are making a difference:

New Spaces like the Credit Unions for Kids Micropreemie Unit

Thanks to philanthropy, this dedicated unit within the Sanford Children’s Level IV NICU offers a soothing environment with minimal stimulation for micropreemie infants born before 28 weeks and weighing less than 1,000 grams. This unit is one of only a handful in the country, staffed around the clock by a multidisciplinary team of NICU nurses, lead physicians, respiratory therapists, dieticians, pharmacists and family support specialists.

Child Life Visits

Our child life program, funded by philanthropy, helps patients and their families navigate medical journeys through education, therapeutic play, emotional guidance and more. This includes teaching coping strategies, using art therapy, developing personalized care plans and incorporating healthcare‑themed play tools — such as pretend vein finders, blood pressure cuffs, IV lines and chemotherapy ports.

Comforting Amenities like Cully’s Cabin

Made possible thanks to philanthropy, Cully’s Cabin is a 3,000-square-foot play and therapy room for pediatric cancer patients and their families. The space includes a teen room with multiple TVs and gaming systems, a hockey‑themed area for large‑motor activities with an interactive screen, green screen and arcade game, a kitchen and craft zone for hands‑on creativity, and a play area filled with toys for younger children.

Advanced Equipment and Technology

Your donations fund specialized equipment and technology designed specifically for kids. This includes everything from pediatric equipment like Giraffe OmniBeds and ultrasound machines to specialized incubators and ventilators for newborns.

Direct Patient Assistance

Your gifts provide financial assistance for families so they can focus on healing. This includes helping with treatment-related costs like meals, mileage and lodging, not covered by insurance.

Meet Piper

The 2026 North Dakota Children’s Miracle Network Champion

At 37 weeks, a routine ultrasound revealed that Piper had myelomeningocele, a severe form of spina bifida. She was born with related complications, including bilateral club feet, where both feet are pointed in and down; hydrocephalus, a buildup of fluid in the brain; and Chiari II malformation, a structural defect in which the lower part of the brain extends into the spinal canal.

Her first year was a whirlwind of surgeries — including a spinal closure at just one day old and brain surgery at seven days old. And that was only the beginning. Today, as the 2026 North Dakota Children’s Miracle Network Champion for Sanford Children’s Hospital in Fargo, Piper and her family are sharing their incredible story to raise awareness and inspire support for thousands of other local kids who will count on Sanford Children’s this year.

Giving in Action: Meet Fox the Facility Dog

Pediatric patients at Sanford Children’s Hospital in Fargo now have a friendly, furry companion to help them navigate their care and treatment thanks to the generosity of one special organization.

A $200,000 lead gift from NutriSource Pet Foods, a KLN Family Brands company, establishes the NutriSource Facility Dog Program at Sanford Children’s, a first-of-its-kind program for the Fargo region and the entire Sanford footprint that uses Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) to provide care, promote healing and improve the emotional well-being of pediatric patients.

Fox, the adorable Golden Retriever, serves as an important member of the Sanford Children’s Hospital care team, said Katy Easter, lead Child Life specialist at Sanford Children’s Hospital.
