Earlier this week, the Bismarck community came together in philanthropy to help usher in a new chapter of cancer care for patients and families across central and western North Dakota.
The Blueway Invitational, held Tuesday, June 10, and the Blueway Gala, held on Wednesday, June 11, collectively raised $394,210 to advance cancer initiatives across the Bismarck region. 100% of every dollar raised will help by broadening outreach efforts, investing in advanced care and early screening technologies, and expanding support services for patients and their families.
“At the Sanford Cancer Center in Bismarck, we cared for a record-number of cancer patients last year,” said Todd Schaffer, MD, president of Sanford Health, Bismarck. “As the region’s largest nonprofit cancer center, philanthropy not only helps us care for cancer patients today, it also allows us to adapt and respond to the growing and changing health care needs of patients across our region, including those in rural areas, through increased access, broader support and more.”

As the second-leading cause of death in North Dakota, the need for innovative cancer care and treatment in Bismarck is essential.
“Cancer care is a team effort — from awareness and preventative screenings through diagnosis, treatment and survivorship,” said Jada Holznagel, vice president for operations at Sanford Health, Bismarck. “Thanks to the kindness and generosity of our community, we can surround patients with everything they need, every step of the way — ensuring more friends and neighbors across our region can achieve the healthy futures they deserve.”
