Marsha’s Story: A Full-Circle Moment of Giving

In July 2025, employees at the Sanford Clinic in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, gathered for a much-anticipated celebration — the opening of a 2008 time capsule created to honor the clinic’s role in the community during what was then MeritCare’s centennial celebration. Inside were snapshots of team life nearly two decades ago: calendars, business cards, scrubs, Kodak film and other memories capturing the culture of the time.

Among the items was something unexpected for longtime employee Marsha Walsh, a radiology technologist: a MeritCare employee giving campaign brochure featuring her photo.

“I had completely forgotten about it,” Marsha said. “Seeing it again brought back so many memories.”

A Reminder of Why Giving Matters

That moment of rediscovery reminded Marsha why she continues to give through the Sanford Health Foundation today.

Back in 2020, Marsha and her family received support from the Employee Crisis Assistance Program during an unexpected and challenging time.

“I felt weird asking for help,” she said. “But we were so thankful the crisis fund was there to help stabilize us during such an uncertain time.”

That support left a lasting impact.

“I’ve always appreciated how these funds help employees when they need it most,” said Marsha. “It means a great deal to me to be able to give back and support others in similar situations.”

As someone who has spent her career caring for others, Marsha understands the hesitation many employees may feel before reaching out for help.

“When you work in health care, it’s easy to think, ‘There’s someone else who needs this more than I do.’ I want other employees to know it’s okay to ask for — and accept — help.”

Her experience, she says, brought her giving journey full circle.

“Twenty years ago, I was giving. Then I needed help. Now, I’m still giving — because you never know when you’ll need it.”

A Culture of Generosity

The East Grand Forks team has since resealed the time capsule, this time as Sanford Health, to be opened again in 2050. New items were added to represent today’s team, ensuring future employees will have their own moment of connection, reflection and gratitude.

Seeing that old brochure in the time capsule told a story Marsha didn’t expect: she’s been part of this culture of generosity for decades.

“It was so meaningful to see that brochure and realize — I’m still part of this, just like back then.”
