Sanford Health has formally combined with the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit senior care providers, headquartered in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The combined organization now employs nearly 50,000 people and offers health services spanning the continuum of life, including clinics, hospitals, health insurance and senior care services.
Will the Society become Sanford Health in name and brand?
No. The Good Samaritan Society name will not change for the foreseeable future. Sanford Health recognizes the Society name has enormous value in post-acute and senior care.
What is the new leadership structure?
Kelby Krabbenhoft now serves as CEO of the combined organization. David Horazdovsky remains CEO of the Society and has joined Sanford Health’s corporate leadership team. Randy Bury has transitioned to president of the Society from his previous role as Sanford Health’s chief administrative officer.
What does the affiliation mean for donors to the Sanford Health Foundation?
Philanthropy will remain critical to the combined organization’s mission.
The Sanford Health Foundation will continue to fully honor each donor’s intentions and ensure that 100 percent of every gift to Sanford Health is designated to the programs or services specified.
What does it mean for patients, clients and residents?
The affiliation represents an opportunity for the combined organization to:
- Provide expert care across a patient’s lifespan.
- Make care more affordable and create stability in today’s uncertain health care marketplace.
- Cultivate the sharing of best practices while empowering employees.
Just how big is the combined organization?
The combined operation has 45 hospitals, nearly 300 clinics and more than 200 senior care locations in 26 states and nine countries, employing nearly 50,000 people.
- 48,622 employees
- More than $5 billion in annual revenue
- 44 medical centers
- 482 clinics
- More than 200 senior living locations
- 190,000 Sanford Health Plan members
- 1,382 physicians, 973 advanced practice providers and 9,703 registered nurses delivering care in more than 80 specialty areas
Does Sanford Health plan to expand with health care facilities in locations where the Society already exists?
Sanford Health is always looking for growth opportunities that can provide care across the lifespan of those we serve. After the affiliation agreement becomes final, the combined organization will be working together to identify those opportunities.
When did discussions for a combined organization begin?
The organizations began exploring an affiliation in late 2017. The Society’s membership overwhelmingly voted in favor of the move in June 2018, which easily cleared regulatory review in August.
