12-year-old facing two rare diseases finds healing, close to home

Eric’s Story

One summer, 12-year-old Eric Bjorlie from Pekin, North Dakota, developed flu-like symptoms that just wouldn’t go away. His local doctors ran test after test until they pinpointed an alarming problem with Eric’s kidneys.

Eric was immediately flown to Sanford Children’s Hospital in Fargo, where miraculously—through the generosity of people like you—the state’s only pediatric kidney dialysis program had just opened.

Eric was diagnosed with not only a rare autoimmune disease, which had fully damaged his kidneys, but also a rare blood disorder. He spent the next two weeks receiving dialysis in intensive care.

Today, Eric continues to count on Sanford Children’s for regular treatment and eventually will need a kidney transplant. But for now, his family is grateful for answers and expert care close to home. The Bjorlies are also so grateful for people like you.
