When medicine reaches its limits and there’s nothing left to prescribe, Drs. Matthew and Meredith Hayes still want to be there for patients.
The Sioux Falls couple, both radiologists at Sanford Health, recently created an endowment to support the Gift of Time campaign for Ava’s House by Sanford. Their fund will help sustain comprehensive care and services — like spiritual care, Child Life and patient assistance — at the multigenerational hospice facility.
When asked what inspired the gift, Meredith shared a story about someone close to their hearts. She explained that, running in between patient appointments and meetings, she and her husband connected with a woman who attends a wellness group in their medical building.
“We always see her walking down the halls,” Meredith explained. “She’s just the sweetest, most generous, kind-hearted woman, always giving hugs.”
When the couple learned their friend is in the final stages of cancer and planning to spend her final days at Ava’s House, they felt moved to do something special.
“Once we knew she was going there, we thought it would meaningful to make a gift to Ava’s House,” Meredith said. “She was so excited when we told her and cried in the hallway.”
After arranging their gift through the Sanford Health Foundation, the Hayeses toured Ava’s House for the first time. The warmth and patient-centered details exceeded their expectations.
“They thought of everything,” Meredith said. “From the fireplace, kitchen, rooms that accommodate family — it has all the comforts of home.
“It’s an amazing place and I’m glad my husband and I were able to contribute a little.”
