Cancer patients receive financial assistance

November 16, 2020

The impact of a cancer diagnosis is overwhelming.

While fighting to survive, too many local patients and families also struggle to make ends meet while paying out-of-pocket costs related to care, like travel expenses.

Many of cancer patients at Sanford Bismarck travel from across the region for their care. The cost of that drive and time away from home adds up, to the point where some patients consider stopping treatment.

This year, 45 patients received financial assistance from Foundation donors to help with travel, food, lodging, and other costs not covered by insurance. This gesture showed these patients that they aren’t alone in their fight against cancer.

“Travel expenses are a significant barrier to care for our patients as we serve so many who live in rural areas,” said Jen Hiatt, a social worker at Sanford Bismarck. “Being able to help with some travel expenses provides them the opportunity to focus more on their treatment than on the financial distress it is causing them and their family. Patients are so thankful that our Foundation is able to provide this kind gesture.”
