As Peter Korhonen grew in his professional career, Sanford Health was by his side every step of the way.
Korhonen started at Sanford nearly seven years ago. He worked as a certified nursing assistant at Sanford Health Nielson Place, a long-term care facility in Bemidji, while attending nursing school. When Korhonen received his licensed practical nurse credentials, he was hired at the Sanford Bemidji Walk-In Clinic. He worked there for a few years before returning to school to become a registered nurse.
After completing his education, Korhonen went back to the walk-in clinic, and there he has stayed. After working as an RN for a year, he was promoted to operations supervisor and now oversees the nursing staff and their daily work.
Today, Korhonen does what he can to give back. As a donor to the Sanford Health Foundation, he supports Sanford’s growth in the Bemidji region and helps make an impact in the lives of others.
Korhonen recently shared why he makes donating to the Foundation a priority:
What do you love most about working at Sanford?
What I love most is the opportunity I have to help people — patients, nurses and providers alike.
What programs and services do you support?
I change what I support based on the current need. I feel that construction and improving our medical infrastructure is vital to the services we can provide our community. I’ve also supported the Employee Crisis Fund to help my fellow employees through times of need.
Hundreds of employees, like you, give generously to support the work that happens at Sanford. What kind of message do you think that sends to our patients and our community?
I hope that it sends a message of care to our community. We truly do care. We want the best possible care and treatment for our family, friends, and neighbors.
What would you tell new Sanford employees to encourage them to join you and give back as a donor?
I would tell new employees that there is a great need for help. While staff already gives so much of their time and their energy and hearts, people still need help. There is still more that we can do. We do great work. We can also be better. We can do more. We can be more.
