“In health care, victory is excellent care of patients,” says Dr. Mike LeBeau, Sanford Bismarck president.
Dr. LeBeau believes the Sanford Health Foundation and its supporters play a crucial role in achieving that victory in the Bismarck region.
Prior to becoming the leader of Sanford Bismarck, Dr. LeBeau practiced nephrology and internal medicine. As a physician and now the head of Sanford Health in the Bismarck region, he has made giving back a priority.
Dr. LeBeau recently shared why he supports the Foundation in his own words:
What do you love most about working here?
I think of myself as a coach. My favorite part of my job is to be able to watch people grow in their roles, start projects and see them come to fruition and the joy that brings. Ultimately, our job is to serve our patients. When we have multidisciplinary groups sit down and really focus on improving ourselves to care for our patients, that is probably the most rewarding part of my job.
How long have you been a donor, and what programs do you support?
I have been a donor for about seven years now, supporting multiple causes. Everybody who knows me knows I’m a huge sports fan, and most recently, we funded scholarships to give more kids the opportunity to attend Sanford POWER for sports training. What I appreciate the most about Sanford POWER is the goal of creating more confident kids. That really ties into our belief here at Sanford Bismarck of engaging youth and being the leader in childhood development.
Since you became a donor, has there been a moment where you’ve been especially proud of the difference you’re making?
Our first group of scholarship recipients recently went through Sanford POWER training. It was very important to me to be able to offer children that normally wouldn’t get to go a chance to work with the Sanford POWER team and have the opportunity to gain self-confidence and all the benefits of the program. I feel lucky I got to do it.
To watch those kids get the opportunity to learn and work hard for success, that made me proud to be a donor.
Can you talk about the role of philanthropy at Sanford, and explain why it is so important?
Philanthropy and supporting a shared vision allows us to come together and gain pride in our community. I think what our Foundation does for the community comes back tenfold. For every dollar we raise, it’s one more opportunity we can bring to our families, friends and neighbors.
What would you tell new Sanford employees to encourage them to join you and give back as a donor?
Giving back sets an example and shows the community what we’re really about at Sanford. It isn’t about how much you donate but just the act of giving.
How does it make you feel to be a part of something bigger than yourself?
To be a donor is fantastic. To know that you have the opportunity to affect somebody else in a positive manner is something that I feel very fortunate to get to do.
