Ever since joining Sanford Health in 2007, neurologist Dr. Kevin Faber has supported the organization he loves as a donor to the Sanford Health Foundation. His gifts have advanced the work of Children’s Miracle Network, hospice and supported staff education opportunities.
A recent loss in his family inspired him to give back in a greater way: by creating an endowment to support the Reimagine campaign that will transform Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center into a national destination for cancer care.
From Fargo to Florida
Dr. Faber’s mother, Patricia Auge, fought endocrine cancer for a year before losing her battle in April 2017. During a year of treatment, Dr. Faber flew from Fargo to his mother’s home in Florida for every appointment to help “translate” what her physicians and caregivers said about her disease and treatment.
“My mom died a couple of years ago from cancer. She didn’t live in this area, so she did not go to Roger Maris, but the whole world of cancer care and hospice are all very meaningful to me,” Dr. Faber said.
In his mother’s honor, Dr. Faber and his wife, Debbie, created the Dr. Kevin and Deborah Faber Endowment for Cancer in Memory of Patricia Auge, to benefit the Reimagine campaign.
“I love the fact that it’s going to be a much bigger and more robust cancer center,” Dr. Faber said. “Seeing the bigger picture made me proud. Being a part of the effort made me especially proud of the difference I’m making as a donor.”
Although his mother did not receive treatment in Fargo, it was Sanford’s mission — and the welcoming Fargo community — that inspired Dr. Faber’s gift back to Sanford.
“I love the focus of Sanford on the community and the emphasis with things like Roger Maris,” he said. “I love the growth of the organization. I think there is such a focus on physician leadership, and the way physicians and providers can help build Sanford.”
‘Consider things larger than yourself’
For Dr. Faber, giving is a passion and he believes it is incumbent upon people to give back.
“By giving back, we allow people to continue to do important work for other people at Sanford,” he said. “My family benefited from work done a thousand miles away, but that same work will be done at Roger Maris. That work will benefit people in our community in ways that are really hard to quantify.”
