Thinking outside the gift box

January 22, 2018

During her years as a commercial investment broker, Kristen Zueger has given many holiday gifts, but none have been received as well as her 2017 holiday surprise.

Instead of sending a gift box full of goodies, Zueger made a donation in honor of each of her clients to the Gift of Time campaign, supporting ongoing operations at Ava’s House by Sanford.

“In all the years, I have never, ever, received as many letters of gratitude and notes of thanks as I have this year,” Zueger said. “The response was outstanding.”

Her clients were delighted and proud to be supporting local hospice care for their community.

Zueger has been a long-time supporter of the Sanford Health Foundation, currently serving as the chair of the Foundation Board of Directors. In addition to the generous philanthropic support of Kristen and her husband Joe, she also has been an especially active member of the Gift of Time campaign cabinet.

In October 2017, Ava’s House officially opened its doors — a milestone made possible by philanthropy and the hard work of supporters like Zueger. The new acute-level, in-patient hospice facility, provides 24-hour nursing care to patients of all ages in a home-like environment. Ava’s House also offers one of only four in-patient pediatric hospice programs in the country.

Gifts like the ones Zueger made in honor of her clients support a $5 million endowment to sustain the exceptional, comprehensive patient care and services that make Ava’s House the special place it is, including:

  • Spiritual care
  • Child Life
  • Patient assistance
  • Expert caregiving
