Seth Emineth has faced a lot in his short life, including 24 surgical procedures and other challenges that come from life with cerebral palsy. But today, Seth’s just like any other 16-year-old, busy making it through his sophomore year at Legacy High School.
“He gets along with everyone,” said Seth’s grandma and primary caregiver, Sue Wingerter. “He’s a very friendly kid and wants to please and be friends with everyone.”
Seth was born three months premature, weighing just two pounds. When he was about a year old, his family started noticing the delays associated with cerebral palsy.
His caregivers quickly started a routine of interventions including speech, occupational and physical therapy at Sanford Children’s Pediatric Therapies, along with surgeries to help lessen Seth’s symptoms.
By the fourth grade, Seth graduated from speech therapy. Then four years ago, he was finally able to master his fine motor skills, including getting ready on his own in the morning, and no longer needed occupational therapy.
Today, he’s still working hard in physical therapy twice a week to achieve his next goal: learning to walk on his own.
In the meantime, Seth has mastered covering longer distances with his wheelchair, especially during the school day.
Through it all, supporters of the Great American Bike Race (GABR) have been by Seth’s side, helping with costs associated with his many surgeries that were not covered by insurance.
“It was a total relief to receive assistance from GABR,” Wingerter said. “It was like someone took an elephant off my chest.”
GABR also helped Seth get an adaptive bike when he was 10 years old. The following year, Seth rode the bike dressed as a pirate during the annual stationary bike race.
“GABR is such a special event for these kids, to have everyone there rooting them on,” Wingerter said.
By supporting GABR, you help make anything possible for local kids like Seth.
