Kindness inspires Guardian Angel gift at Sanford Thief River Falls

December 17, 2019

Earlier this year, Natalie Hamrum and her husband, Tyrell, became first-time parents when they welcomed their daughter, Elise, to the world. But for Natalie, the first days of motherhood were clouded by anxiety.

Gazing at the newborn in her arms, Natalie wondered if she was ready to care for such a tiny new life.

“I only wanted to be a good mother; there were so many unknowns,” Natalie said.

Soon the self-doubts became overwhelming.

“I felt like I was having a heart attack,” she said. “I’ve never felt like that before. My fingers and toes were tingling.”

That’s when Natalie met Sylvia Majeres, a Sanford Thief River Falls obstetrics nurse.

Majeres showed Natalie how to care for her new baby. Most comforting was Majeres’s reminder to Natalie that she was indeed capable of being a good mom.

When it was time for the new family to go home, Majeres gave Natalie her personal cell phone number. Within the week, Natalie reached out to Majeres for more help.

“She took time away from her own family to come to our house, and I’m so grateful for that,” Natalie said.

As the Hamrums found their rhythm as a family of three, Natalie wanted to let Majeres know that she’d made a lasting impact in their lives.

“I’m eternally grateful for what she did for me and my family and I would never be able to repay her for it,” Natalie said.

When Natalie discovered the Sanford Health Foundation’s Guardian Angel program through her My Sanford Chart phone app, she knew it could be a powerful way to show her gratitude.

The Guardian Angel program gives patients and their families a meaningful way to thank a Sanford doctor, nurse, staff member or volunteer who made a difference in their hospital experience. Gifts of any size are accepted, and the honoree receives a Guardian Angel pin to wear proudly.

Majeres received the honor during a staff meeting. She was surprised and overjoyed by the award.

“Natalie has enough on her plate to function, so for her to take the time to research Guardian Angel and make this gift, it means a lot,” Majreres said.
