This Giving Tuesday, Dec. 1, choose to support the Great American Bike Race (GABR).
Making dinner or doing the laundry can feel like chores to so many of us. But for Nathan Leier, being able to do these things himself is a luxury he doesn’t take for granted.
Nathan was diagnosed with Friedreich’s ataxia, a rare form of muscular dystrophy, at 12 years old. The disease slowly weakens every muscle in the body. At 18, Nathan lost his ability to walk, and today relies on a wheelchair.
At first, the limitations of a seated wheelchair meant Nathan, who is in his early 30s, couldn’t live on his own. Then a year ago, funds from the Great American Bike Race (GABR) helped Nathan purchase a standing wheelchair.
The chair moves Nathan from a seated to standing position, allowing him to do all the things he needs to do.
Nathan Leier’s standing wheelchair allows him to move from a seated to standing position.
“This wheelchair allowed me to branch out and live on my own,” said Nathan, who works for the City of Bismarck as an office assistant. He originally hails from a rural community near Strasburg and dreams of returning one day to help manage his family’s farm operations.
The impact of GABR stretches far beyond the individual pieces of equipment, therapy sessions and the financial assistance our supporters make possible.
Every dollar disbursed brings recipients like Nathan closer to living their best lives despite limitations caused by conditions permanently effecting development like cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy.
“Thanks to everyone who has supported GABR,” Nathan said. “Without your generosity, I wouldn’t be able to have this wheelchair. I’m very thankful and grateful for all the assistance.”
The first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday, is an international day of giving that brings people together to support their favorite nonprofit causes. This Dec. 1, we hope you’ll choose to support GABR.
