This October, the team at Ava’s House by Sanford will celebrate two years of bringing the gifts of time, compassion and love to patients and families.
The multi-generational inpatient hospice facility, in Sioux Falls, provides 24-hour nursing care in a homelike environment. Ava’s House also is part of just a handful of facilities in the country that offer pediatric hospice programs.
Since first admitting patients on Oct. 16, 2017, more than 450 families from across the region and beyond have turned to Ava’s House to care for their loved ones.
Number of families impacted by Ava’s House by community:
Natalie Rae, from Sioux Falls, and her family were impacted by Ava’s House earlier this year when her husband, Robert, received care at the facility during the last two weeks of his life.
She wrote this special note about her family’s experience:
First came the storm, which uprooted our lives. Then there was a rainbow with all its beauty. Ava’s House, staff and volunteers, compose this rainbow.
Our small family became a large family, traveling together along this final path. There was a warmth that we had never experienced before. Everyone we met had a special empathy for others. They gave us strength that we hadn’t had previously.
Life is full of blessings if one pays attention. Ava’s House has been the greatest blessing of all.

Not only does Ava’s House have a talented and compassionate staff, but more than 30 volunteers visit the facility routinely to share their time and talents with patients and families including:
- Patient companions
- Therapy pairs with a dog and handler
- Musicians including pianists, violinists and a ukulele player
- A Reiki therapist
More blessings to come
Ava’s House wouldn’t be here today without the support from generous donors who helped raise $10 million to construct the facility.
Now its future depends on you.
Your gift today will support a $5 million endowment to provide charity care for patients who can’t otherwise afford hospice and help sustain expert caregiving and services such as spiritual care, Child Life and patient assistance that make Ava’s House the special place it is.
To help us reach our endowment goal and continue supporting patients and families from across our region, please contact one of our gift officers:
